Dark Energy

Description: Don’t know how to spend this weird extra day in February? We’ve got you covered! Come and celebrate the leap year with us as we present an exciting program featuring works by Dvorak, Haydn and Kelly-Marie Murphy. Dvorak’s “Cypresses” are a set of piano miniatures that were inspired by the poetry of Moravian poet Gustav Pfleger. Later arranged by Dvorak for string quartet in 1887, they beautifully intertwine whimsical folk elements with a contrapuntal richness. In “Dark Energy” Canadian composer Kelly-Marie Murphy takes us on a journey to the early beginnings of our universe, employing complex rhythmic layers and an expansive tonal language to capture the chaotic and tenuous conditions present before and after the Big Bang. One of the true masterpieces of the string quartet genre, Haydn’s “String Quartet in C Major, Op. 76 No. 3” is abound with flowing lines, drama, humour and melodic inventiveness. The second movement is a theme and variations based upon his famous “Emperor Hymn”, a melody which people will now recognize as the basis for the German national anthem. Light snacks and beverages will be available for purchase during intermission with all proceeds going towards the church.
